Auditions
All applicants must audition. Applicants who audition at the Conservatory or a regional site may request an audition date when completing the online application at www.unifiedapps.org. Certain instrument areas require a prescreen recording, which is reviewed by faculty to determine if the applicant will be invited to a live audition at the Conservatory or a regional site. For more information, review our prescreen requirements.
The deadline for submitting prescreen recordings is December 1.
Applicants are to prepare their audition repertoire from the requirements described below. All solo repertoire is to be memorized unless otherwise indicated. Transfer applicants should perform repertoire appropriate for the level they seek at the Conservatory.
Graduate and postgraduate applicants will be notified of the admission decision on or before March 15 and undergraduate applicants will be notified on or before April 1, provided all required application materials are received by the application deadline. Applicants do not receive an admission decision at the time of the audition, nor do they receive audition results.
Conservatory auditions occur in one of three ways: a live audition at the Conservatory, an audition at a regional site, or a final audition recording. Live auditions are recommended for all applicants and are required for certain instrument areas. Applicants who audition at SFCM will have an opportunity to explore our building, meet faculty and current students, and observe classes and rehearsals.
Live auditions at the Conservatory are required of the following applicants:
- Anyone residing in California
- Undergraduate and graduate voice applicants residing in North America (USA, Canada, Mexico)
- Graduate applicants for chamber music, conducting, percussion, timpani or organ.
- Applicants for Professional Studies and Postgraduate Diplomas
Regional auditions are available for the following applicants:
- Undergraduate applicants residing outside of California (except voice and percussion)
- Graduate applicants residing within North America (except voice, conducting, chamber music, percussion, timpani or organ).
Final Audition Recordings are accepted from the following applicants:
- Undergraduate applicants residing outside of California (except voice)
- Graduate applicants residing outside of North America (except chamber music and conducting)
- Composition applicants are strongly encouraged to audition at either a San Francisco audition or at a regional audition site. However, if unable to make a live audition, undergraduate and international applicants may submit a final audio-visual piano recording to accompany their portfolio.
- PLEASE NOTE: Final recordings are due by the December 1 application deadline.
It is mandatory to submit all final recordings online through our ArtsApp portal. This secure online portal will allow you to upload your audio-visual and/or portfolio materials. There is a $10 fee for uploading materials. Final audition recordings may only be submitted in hard copy by permission of the Office of Admission.
ArtsApp accepts the following format types:
- Audio (.mp3)
- Audio-Visual (.asf, .avi, .flv, .mov, .m4v, .mp4, .mpg, .mvb, .swf, .wmv)
- Documents (.doc, .pdf, .xls)
Total portfolio size needs to be under 900MB, with a maximum file size of 500 MB. Please upload each piece as its own file. For technical support with your ArtsApp submission, please contact support@artsapp.com.
The following instrument areas require a prescreen recording: chamber music, composition, conducting, piano and voice. Faculty will review prescreen recordings to determine if an applicant will be invited to audition live at the Conservatory or a regional site. Please refer to the final audition repertoire section for live audition requirements.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The deadline for submitting prescreen recordings is November 15. Please plan accordingly. We may accept late recordings on a case-by-case basis for an additional fee. Applicants will be notified by December 20 if they will be invited for a live audition.
If your instrument is not listed above, you are not required to submit a prescreen recording.
